The story, which spurred on two sequels, follows the life of a Polish student who has been drafted into the army. He spends his remaining days re-connecting with people from his past and appreciating what freedom he does have. Skolimowski plays the lead character, Andrzej, and really, he was the only one who would have agreed to take the job. The film, his first full length feature, was actually comprised of several shorts shot over a lengthy period of time, and so it would have been impossible to hire an actor for the low-budget project.

This screening is part of Close-Up on Masters of Polish Cinema season
